Monitor Calibration
This page helps you to perform basic calibration of your PC monitor.
Look at the following grey scale wedge, this should have 21 equally spaced strips from totally black to totally white.
If some of the black wedges on the left blend into each other so they all look the same black then you need to adjust the contrast/brightness on your monitor so you can see the difference between them.
Similarly, if you cannot see the white/grey patches to the right as separate shades, then you need to make adjustments.
If you can see all the grey wedges and they appear completely black at one end and completely white at the other, then your monitor is at least reasonably adjusted for luminance and you will be able to judge the darkness/lightness of images correctly.
If the wedges look coloured, then you have colour adjustment problems beyond the scope of this simple test.
